about

The Specter on Sutton is all about leaving things behind.

With this album, I'm leaving covers behind. You won't find them on full albums going forward.

This album will leave the Mountain Goats behind. John Darnielle will always probably be my largest influence but I'm trying to bring in more musical ideas. This will be the last place you find me writing an Alpha Song or a Going to Song or a Standard Bitter love song and I have yet to decide if I'm leaving behind my Panasonic RX-FT500 as well because, as wonderful a collaborator as it is, it will always be associated with another artist.

This is where I leave behind a girl from England with green eyes and big plans. The Specter on Sutton is a concept album that I didn't know I was writing at the time. With the exception of the three-song run from Stumble Song to Alpha Lease Extension, the You in every song is the same person; even the songs I didn't write.

Thank You to Madeline for supplying your wonderful voice and brilliant advice for Alpha Lease Extension. I hope we collaborate for a thousand more years to come.

Thank You to Adam for always being a friend and listening to every bad demo I send you. I hope my cover of your song, the best song featured on the album, does it some justice.

Special Thanks to Tommaso, who supplied the marvelous boombox this album was recorded with.

about

Empty Stage Richmond, Virginia

These cassettes with Mountain Goats wannabe songs keep showing up with my door with instructions to upload them to bandcamp with vague threats of demon polar bears if I don't comply. He's probably just crazy but have you seen the damage a polar bear can do? Those things could tear through a baseball stadium made of cereal boxes like they were nothing. I'm not going to take my chances. ... more
